A first catalogue of the works of Otto H. Engel
It is a major area of interest of MKdW to deal with works created on Föhr by the painter Otto Heinrich Engel. In 1898, he became co-initiator of the Berlin Secession, and he spent countless summer vacations and research trips on the island. The collection of his paintings and oil sketches in the Sammlung Kunst der Westküste has grown considerably in recent years, and that is what led to the idea of a comprehensive catalogue of his works. Since we are able to locate and identify the places Engel portrayed, such a catalogue will also serve as a kind of cultural-historical overview of the island and its connection with its heritage. In order to complete the project, however, the museum needs your support.

Otto H. Engel: On a Holiday Morning, 1903, MKdW
Like no other artist, Otto H. Engel depicted the lifeworld of Föhr in the most evocative manner. After 1901 he spent almost every summer on Föhr, staying at Grethjens Gasthof in Alkersum or, later, in his own studio in Nieblum. Engel’s main works include The Children’s Party and Mourning on Föhr – works that were highly identity-building for the islanders.
With youR help we now want to make this first ever comprehensive catalogue of the works of Otto H. Engel a reality. You can contribute to a project that will give this significant chapter of the history of art and the history of the island the visibility it truly deserves.
We ask for your kind support. Any amount will be valuable and make a difference. It will be received with the utmost gratitude.
