Miguel Rothschild created this intricate photographic installation on the island of Föhr. With your help, we would like to make it a permanent part of our collection in order to further strengthen MKdW's contemporary art profile.
Miguel Rothschild was a guest on Föhr in 2023 as part of MKdW's artist-in-residence programme. In his work Storm on Föhr (Sturm auf Föhr), he focuses on the high sky above the Wadden Sea at low tide. Everything is grey in grey. Occasional lighter cloud formations appear, but a steady rain pours down over the sea. Pouring rain without let-up. There seems to be no end to it. But the supposed rain is not falling in the natural space itself, but is generated by nylon threads that the artist has tirelessly wrapped around the work. As they say in a German figure of speech: It's raining strings! Rothschild's humour shines through in this and many of his other works. The art historian Beatrice von Bismarck puts it aptly: "They are metaphors with the help of which the superficial is inextricably linked with the abysmal, the cryptic or the enraptured.”
Miguel Rothschild, born in Buenos Aires/Argentina in 1963, is an internationally renowned photographer and installation artist based in Berlin. He studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires and at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin.
His works are represented in museums and collections worldwide, including the Berlinische Galerie, the Malba – Museo de Arte Latinoamericano and the MAMBA – Museo de Arte Moderno in Buenos Aires, the Fundación Juan March in Madrid, the Jewish Museum Berlin and the Hermès Art Collection in Paris.
Miguel Rothschild's photo installation is currently on display in the exhibition Beyond the Visible – Jochen Hein & Miguel Rothschild at the MKdW.
