The coasts are in a process of constant change, and the gaze contemporary artists have directed towards them is equally fluid. Current perspectives from photography and video art are defined by new aesthetic approaches, social questions and artists’ personal experiences. They also reveal a new way of looking at the west coast, this extensive geographic region shaped by the wind, sea, people and their perceptions.
In recent years, the Museum Kunst der Westküste has been able to greatly expand its collections in the field of international contemporary art. This exhibition brings together a selection of these new artistic positions. Several of the artists have developed their works directly on Föhr, as artists in residence. Others have looked elsewhere to the North Sea region or broaden the perspective by encompassing global contexts, such as questions of cultural identity, colonial history or ecological change. In this exhibition the coast appears not as a nostalgic motif but as a site of vibrant engagement.
The artists participating in the exhibition are Nicole Ahland, Per Bak Jensen, Joakim Eskildsen, Rune Guneriussen, Nan Hoover, Anja Jensen, Ellen Kooi, Yinka Shonibare, Trine Søndergaard, Mila Teshaieva and Thomas Wrede.
