Humans are the central theme in the works of German-French artist Jean Noël Schramm. Using a wide range of techniques—including photography, drawing, and painting—Schramm explores the image of humans in their environment and traces their feelings and emotions.
In the series “Badende” (Bathers), Schramm portrays beach figures with clear contours and precise coloration. The background always remains minimalistic, allowing the posture, every gesture, and every detail of the clothing to come to the fore.
Created during an artist residency at the Museum Kunst der Westküste on Föhr, these works do not capture the island's panorama, but focus on individuals in moments of tranquility or casual activity. This results in portraits that appear both documental and timeless.
The images are also exciting when compared: Schramm began his series featuring bathers around eight years ago on an island near Athens. Looking at the portraits of beachgoers now taken on Föhr, he is fascinated by how differently bathers behave in the north and south.
