In November 2025, Danish artist Lars Waldemar visited us. It was essentially an island-to-island visit: even though Waldemar now lives in Esbjerg, he was born on Fanø and still feels a close connection to the most northern North Frisian island.
The type of forms that can be found in nature—combined with a distinctive imagination and an equally distinctive creative drive — are the central theme in the oeuvre of the Danish artist, whose work falls somewhere between sculpture, graphic art, and conceptual art.
Lars Waldemar took photographs at various locations on the island of Föhr and then altered them: in the resulting drawings and objects, the natural shapes and colors of nature are transformed into schematic color gradients and geometric grids—the effect is surprisingly new, yet somehow also familiar. Transferring forms, varying them, inventing something new and thereby opening up new contexts – this seems to be one of the artist's approaches.
The second project that was realised on Föhr can be understood in a similar way: small plastic containers, originally old pill boxes, are filled with many small plaster moulds packed tightly together. At first glance, they appear to be replicas of real natural objects, but on closer inspection, one recognises the artistic imagination behind each form. In his artist statement, which precedes his latest catalog, Waldemar comments on his work: “New materials, new contexts, and new forms of expression emerge, but simply put, it is mainly an investigation of what we perceive as natural” [Exhibition catalog Lars Waldemar, Punctaria neglecta, published by Museumsberg Flensburg, Flensburg 2025]. Lars Waldemar has a desire to create works of art in various locations along the west coast — from northern Denmark to the south of the Netherlands — and then exhibit them collectively.
