Nan Hoover (New York 1931 – Berlin 2008) is one of the pioneers of international light, video, and performance art. After initially working as a painter in Washington, D. C. and New York, Hoover embarked on a conscious departure from traditional artistic means. In the early 1970s and now living in Amsterdam, she created performances and light installations that are inextricably linked with her video art. She is guided by the goal of making the phenomenon of “light” tangible and making people conscious of “time.” Her poetic videos “Luna,” “Flora,” and “Returning to Fuji” force a focused acceptance, the process from seeing to perceiving. Drawings, video stills, photographs, and sculptures will also be featured in the exhibition conceived for the Museum Kunst der Westküste. Following participations in the documenta in Kassel (1977, 1987) and the Venice Biennale (1984), as well as solo exhibitions at MoMA, New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and elsewhere, this is the first time her works will be on view in a museum in Northern Germany. The exhibition has been organised in cooperation with the Nan Hoover Foundation in Amsterdam.
