Modernism Meets the Coast - A Fresh Start in the North

With the exhibition „Modernism Meets the Coast“, Museum Kunst der Westküste dedicates itself to a fascinating chapter of European art history – the early impulses of Modernism in the North. From the coast of the Netherlands to the shores of Norway, new ways of seeing light, colour and nature came into being – far from the big cities, but very much in lively dialogue with them. „Modernism“ refers here not so much to particular styles, but rather to a certain attitude: The courage to question what meets the eye, to change the perspectives and initiate new ways of thinking. Whether it was undertaken by individuals or took place in artists’ colonies; gradually the embers of Modernism flared up along the edge of the continent. Based on the museum’s own collection, enriched by significant international loans, the MKdW sheds light on the places where Modernism met the sea. The exhibition enables a rediscovery of the birth of a new artistic freedom in an unusual and perhaps overlooked perspective.
