THE MKdW AS A GUEST AT THE MUSÉE OCÉANOGRAPHIQUE DE MONACO

As a guest at the Musée océanographique de Monaco, the MKdW presents an exclusive selection of top-quality paintings and contemporary photographs from its art collection. Visitors go on a journey along the North Sea coast and witness the important role the sea has always played – and continues to play – for the cultural relations between the island of Föhr, the north of Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands and Norway.

Moreover, in the time from 1824 to 1916 when the selected paintings from the collection of the MKdW were created, major new developments confronted coastal dwellers with ever new challenges. The sea had long provided the livelihood for the people. Towards the end of the 19th century, beaches increasingly came to be seen as recreational and leisure areas due to changing social conditions and greater prosperity. The changes manifested themselves in the subjects the artists chose to paint. Corresponding to this, four contemporary photographic artists extend the dialogue into the present.

Otto H. Engel, Joakim Eskildsen, Riitta Ikonen und Karoline Hjorth, Peder Severin Krøyer, Max Liebermann, Georg Anton Rasmussen, Laurits Tuxen and Mila Teshaieva are among the artists included.
