PAULA MODERSOHN-BECKER & OTTO MODERSOHN The 1903 Visit to Amrum

15. June 2014 to 21. September 2014

“As if on the edge of Paradise” – that is how Worpswede-based paint er Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876–1907) described her impression of the North Frisian island of Amrum. Earlier that same
year she had studied modern French art up close in Paris. Now, in the summer of 1903, she was taking a vacation trip with her husband, Otto Modersohn (1865-1943), one of the co-founders of the Worpswede art colony, and his daughter, Elsbeth, to the North Sea to vacation. Among the luggage they carried were, of course, brushes, pal ettes and crayons: the couple created numerous oil studies, drawings and paintings – works that reveal the intensity of them working alongside one another and learning from one another, as well as the increasing distinctness of their artistic views. The exhibition features almost all of the works they created on Amrum, as well as person - al postcards, photographs and notes – they encapsulate a happy period of their lives. The exhibition assembles loans from public and private collections, notably from the Otto Modersohn Museum in Fischerhude.
