In 2014 and 2015, the Ukrainian-born and Berlin-based photographer Mila Teshaieva was repeatedly a guest of our museum as artist-in-residence. During her time on Föhr the artist developed the photo series Die Insel, which was the subject of a solo exhibition at the MKdW that ran from 26 June 2016 until 8 January 2017.
Mila Teshaieva used a lantern to light the Frisians of the island in the dark of night. In this way she produced about forty portraits vacillating between everyday reality, fantasy, and mysticism, in which the photographer captures the clash of tradition and Modernism. From 25 August 2017 until 2 April 2018 the series was also shown in Berlin at the Museum of European Cultures.
